Ingenious mixture between Scandinavian minimalism and the Japanese spirit, the Japandi style offers a breath of fresh air to our interiors. If you like sober, clean and warm decorations at the same time, Japandi style is for you. Focus on this trend that has everything to please.
What is Japandi style?
Do you want an interior decoration that breathes serenity and well-being? Japandi style is ideal for revamping your home. Both minimalist and cozy, it is today one of the main decorative trends.
To start, what does Japandi mean? It is simply the contraction of Japan and Scandinavia. As its name suggests, this trend is a nice mixture of the cocooning spirit specific to the Scandinavian style and the aesthetics of Japanese style. These two atmospheres, at first glance very different from each other, are however complementary. Indeed, the Scandinavian spirit is characterized by its warm appearance, while the Japanese spirit stands out for its elegance. The two styles, thus gathered, allow us to create a sleek decor.
Although they have differences, Japanese style and Scandinavian style are characterized by their minimalism. Both highlight the importance of creating rooms before any functional. Simplicity is therefore at the heart of Japandi style. We then find the Japanese idea of “Wabi-Sabi”, which results in the search for beauty in the imperfect. The result of an Japandi atmosphere is then recognizable by its clean lines, functional furniture, pretty finishes and a lot of contrast.
How to create an atmosphere Japandi at home?
The Japandi decoration invites itself into all the rooms in your house. In order to create a Japandi decoration interior, 3 points are preferred: colors, materials and accessories.
1/ Favor sober and contrasting colors
As for colors, the goal is to integrate a Zen spirit, fresh and soothing in your interior. We will then favor neutral colors. We forget the vitamin shades that give their place to shades of white, beige, gray and brown, which make the renowned of the Nordic spirit. In Japandi style, the colorful notes are natural, with touches of fir green or midnight blue. Finally, black is present to bring contrast to the elements.
2/ Opt for noble and quality materials
To adopt the Japandi style, it is essential to choose the right materials for your coatings, furniture and accessories. This decoration style highlights natural and raw materials. In this sense, we favor solid wood for its authenticity: walnut, teak or rattan. It may be interesting to mix light wood and dark wood species to create this famous contrast specific to Japanese style. To continue on materials, natural fibers such as wicker or bamboo are also to be favored, just like black or gray metal. For fabrics, organic cotton or linen are particularly suitable for Japandi style.
For the surface covering, bet on a light wooden parquet, but also on cork, bamboo blades, stone or even waxed concrete. On the side of wall coverings, ecological painting will be chosen as a priority. Vegetable fiber panels and paneling also represent interesting solutions from both aesthetic and functional point of view. Do not hesitate to create a wall in wooden cleats to bring relief and heat to the room.
3/ How to associate your furniture for a Japandi decoration?
For more lightness, dare the furniture with simple and rounded curves. Japandi style is a state of mind inviting well-being at home. Your furniture must therefore be as beautiful as it is easy to live in. You can mix Swedish design icons with traditional Japanese furniture. Opt for a futon or a screen as a headboard in the bedroom. Combine a nice Scandinavian armchair with one or more floor cushions in the living room, or a low caning buffet with a Scandinavian wooden chair in the dining room. This style offers you many possibilities!
The importance of minimalism in Japandi style
As for accessories in Japandi style, you have to keep in mind the idea of focusing on the essentials, we only keep the functional.
1/ Make minimalist accessories
Although the decoration must remain minimalist, nothing prevents you from decorating it with a few handmade decorative objects from Japanese or Scandinavian crafts. This will bring life and heat to your peaceful interior.
Plants are an essential natural element for the interior. They can also help soften the clean lines of this minimalist look while adding colored touches. Indeed, they are rarely present in the Scandinavian interiors. To do this, arrange green plants like aloe vera, palm trees, monstera … Also think of the dried flowers arranged in a vase to enhance your low buffet.
For luminaires, bet on pure and delicate shapes, but also natural materials such as metal, rattan, wood or papier mache. We find once again the raw aspect present in the Sabi Wabi. We advise you to opt for suspensions with soft and sifted lighting to enjoy a restful moment in a calm and comforting atmosphere. Pretty paper lights will help you create a subdued atmosphere conducive to relaxation in any room in your home.
For your household linen: curtains, cushions or your bed set, opt for natural textiles, such as flax, hemp or cotton gas. Hygge plaids and cushions will bring texture and heat to your Japandi decoration.
2/ Favor low furniture and leave a lot of open space
Japanese furniture tends to be low, to meet the traditional cultural need to feel near the earth. Low elements also give a real feeling of space and therefore calm in an interior. Low furniture is therefore an important characteristic of Japandi style.
So opt instead for a low row than a high cabinet or, for example, a kitchen without wall elements releasing space above the worktop. Another way to create an idea of space and minimalism is to ensure that there is sufficient free space around large furniture. For Japandi style, it is important to create as uncluttered and ventilated spaces as possible.
